Oscar-nominated Australian actor Toni Collette headlines an offbeat crime thriller created by Mae Martin, which marks a distinct tonal shift from her semi-autobiographical romantic comedy Feelgood. Martin plays dedicated police officer Alex Dempsey, who moves to the idyllic town of Tall Pines with her pregnant wife Laura (Sarah Gadon) to start anew. At first, everything seems perfect in the close-knit community but then Alex meets Abbie (Sydney Topliffe) and Leila (Alyvia Alyn Lind), two outspoken students at Tall Pines Academy. This school for troubled youth is run by the mysterious Evelyn Wade (Collette) and her unorthodox methods to bend teenager to her will is a cause of concern. As Alex digs deeper into the town and its dark history, secrets are exhumed and the police officer fears the epicentre of the madness is the academy.
